I have only used this feature when reading in bed at night on my Fire. My eyes don't hurt from the strain of the bright light, even if I put the light lower on a device with bluelight. I think it does help with sleeping better.

You can go to Settings>Display & Brightness>Night Shift to set a custom schedule to turn the feature on and off as you choose.
