Sprint is able to unlock a subsidized phone internationally (while leaving it locked
 domestically) for your travels. I'd assume others are the same.

AT&T refused to unlock my sister's paid-for cell phone when she went to Europe for a year. She cancelled her account, but she couldn't get her phone unlocked so had to buy a new unlocked one in Europe.
