When u called Apple last year the gentleman on the phone implied that this could be done. Now. That said. Many times starting a new line of service comes with a two year service commitment. I would stick with the MVNOs

Of course, Ewing your same service would hardly be a problem. But what if you did that then a few weeks later wanted to change to Verizon? Could you just buy a new SIM?

Doing something like that simply is not on my horizon, so I haven't looked into it.
I would think it should work.
