I agree, its quite a brutal means to lock customers in. On the other hand, the customer accepted those terms.

Here in NZ we dont do locked phones, except for some MVNO's providing cheap phones on prepay, so they lock it in for 6 months with a teeny exit cost. We have good competition as customners can move phones without technical restriction. You can get a $29 plan abn that includes free Spotify Premium, stuff like that. If you move providers, your cell number goes with you, so there are no barriers

Unlocked phones are those that will still work if you leave the cell supplier. They ought to be illegal, you pay for the phone but they no longer work when you quit the cell  phone service supplier. Like having you landline phone quiit working when you chose another phone company.
