[iPad] iCloud - Confusing

This isn't a question as such, but any comments please feel free

I use my Apple ID for iCloud but as it isn't an iCloud.com address I cannot sync Notes. So, I thought I will create an iCloud.com email address, change the iCloud setting to that. I did this, and I see that I now have an iCloud.com address tdale2014@icloud.com but in Settings on 5S, iPad Air, rMBP, its still my regular Apple ID  tdale@xtra.co.nz, and that the iCloud address is what appears to be an alias. Its listed under Advanced. Notes is now able to be added, great.

Given all this, it seems the loss of previous synced iCloud items won't happen, thats good.  Are there any other benefits that accrue using an iCloud.com address as compared to a regular email address in iCloud?

I will revisit adding my Yahoo address (tdale@xtra.co.nz) to the OSX Mail.app and try to make it true IMAP with all my custom folders. Thats gonna need some trickery. I am quite happy with the Yahoo webmail, but being recent switcher, I am keen to use all OSX functions that I can.

I am pretty sure that the majority of iPad owners are NOT Macintosh owners, and that Apple is well aware of that fact.

When it said to use iTunes, was it *really* needful for you to be told "Install iTunes if you haven't already"?

Re: [iPad] I want to sync my new iPad Air with my computer using iTunes.

I cannot recall right now as I am not on my PC where iTunes still is, and on the rMBP I haven't set iTunes up.

BUT, its in iTunes, it doesn't matter where the files are, you cannot use them, but iTunes will use them IF you request a restore.

Here you go Jim.  http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4946  and the key points for you are below

Where are iTunes backups stored on your computer

The folder where your backup data is stored depends on the computer's operating system. Make sure the backup folder is included in your data-backup routine. iTunes places the backup files in the following places:
  • Mac~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/
The "~" represents your Home folder. If you don't see Library in your home folder, hold Option and click the Go menu.
  • Windows XP: \Documents and Settings\(username)\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
To quickly access the Application Data folder, click Start, and choose Run. Type %appdata% and click OK.
  • Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8: \Users\(username)\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
To quickly access the AppData folder, click Start. In the search bar, type %appdata% and press Return.

What does iTunes back up

iTunes will back up the following information
  • Camera Roll (photos, screenshots, images saved, and videos taken)
For devices without a camera, Camera Roll is called Saved Photos.
  • Contacts* and Contact Favorites (regularly sync your contacts to a computer or cloud service, such as iCloud, to back them up)
  • Calendar accounts and subscribed calendars
  • Calendar events
  • Safari bookmarks, cookies, history, offline data, and currently open pages
  • Autofill for webpages
  • Offline web application cache/database
  • Notes
  • Mail accounts (mail messages aren't backed up)
  • Microsoft Exchange account configurations
  • Call history
  • Messages (iMessage and carrier SMS or MMS pictures and videos)
  • Voicemail token (This isn't the voicemail password, but is used for validation when connecting. This is only restored to a phone with the same phone number on the SIM card)
  • Voice memos
  • Network settings (saved Wi-Fi hotspots, VPN settings, network preferences)
  • Keychain (includes email account passwords, Wi-Fi passwords, and passwords you enter into websites and some applications)
If you encrypt the backup, you can transfer the keychain information to the new device. With an unencrypted backup, you can restore the keychain only to the same iOS device. If you're restoring to a new device with an unencrypted backup, you need to enter these passwords again.
  • App Store Application data (except the Application itself, its tmp, and Caches folder)
  • Application settings, preferences, and data, including documents
  • In-app purchases
  • Game Center account
  • Wallpapers
  • Location service preferences for apps and websites you've allowed to use your location
  • Home screen arrangement
  • Installed profiles
When you restore a backup to a different device, installed configuration profiles aren't restored (such as accounts, restrictions, or anything that can be specified through an installed profile). Any accounts or settings that aren't associated with an installed profile will be restored.
  • Map bookmarks, recent searches, and the current location displayed in Maps
  • Nike + iPod saved workouts and settings
  • Paired Bluetooth devices (which you can only use if restored to the same phone that did the backup)
  • Saved suggestion corrections
  • Trusted hosts that have certificates that can't be verified
  • Web clips
* Your contacts are part of the backup to preserve recent calls and favorites lists. Back up your contacts to a supported personal information manager (PIM), iCloud, or another cloud-based service to avoid any potential contact data loss.

I got my iPad Air linked and I chose to back up the iPad.
But I can't figure out where on the computer the back up ended up. :-(

Re: [iPad] Re: I want to sync my new iPad Air with my computer using iTunes.

Yes, my daughter explained that. She has an iPhone.

But the iPad m manual is as clear as mud on this.

That was why I asked about it.

Here's the section:

---

iTunes  [from manual]
-
Tips for syncing with iTunes on your computer
Connect iPad to your computer, select it in iTunes, and set options in the different panes.

My comment:

Nowhere did it say to install iTunes on the computer. I guess they don't expect PC users to buy an iPad. :-0

The part below is not at all clear: What is a summary pane and is it on the iPad or the computer. I have always said that the people who write manuals must be the lowest paid in the company, they certainly seem to be the stupedist.
••
In the Summary pane, you can set iTunes to sync iPad automatically when it's attached to your computer. To temporarily override this setting, hold down Command and Option (Mac) or Shift and Control (PC) until you see iPad appear in the iTunes window.

It's backed up in iTunes. You can also install iCloud on your computer if you want.
