If you are considering a backup battery you need to evaluate if you are the type of person who will keep it charged (I will forget) or have a automatic system in place. My experience with hurricanes is that I just charge things in my car. I have been tempted to set up my Prius so it can charge my house.

Our power outages have historically occurred on 3 occasions:
Blizzards/ice storms, hurricanes, severe thunderstorms.
In general the next day is clear and sunny, and often the same day, within hours of the event.
