Re: [iPad] How email has changed with smart devices

I use the built in iOS email client to access the Gmail website for me so I don't have to do it myself.  I only use the website if I want to change settings or build a filter.

ISP mail is provided and hosted by the ISP
If you use a client such as Outlook, Apple Mail, Eudora, Thunderbird, you are transferring the emails to your computer FROM the ISP server. (You can opt to also keep them at the ISP server if you wish)

WEBMAIL is also provided by most ISP's, in this case you dont transfer the emails to your computer, you READ them at the ISP server via a webpage, hence webmail

Some folks are confusing web based with internet based. One can access information through an Internet Service Provider ( which you pay for an account), it can be e mail through an e mail client software program or the world wide web through a browser software program. In addition one can also access ones e mail through a browser, this is generally called webmail. All of this is part of the internet.

exactly. it's not delivered by your friendly neighboorhood postman. it's
web based. webmail is, as has been written, just another option for
accessing it.

If you do not get your emails over the World-Wide Web, then how *do* you?

those POP/IMAP & SMTP servers.
