Re: [iPad] How email has changed with smart devices

Thanks Jim for the clarification.

I also hate webmail, but when the Telco I work for had Yahoo take over our hosting, I found their UI to be clean and a simple Outlook Express-like interface and it suits me to have my desktop email access not tied to a specific desktop, mine or not mine.

I see you use an icloud email address, are you saying for that particular one, you need to use the client installed on your Mac, or via your iOS devices?
And that if you were elsewhere, and had access to a computer you would not be able to access email there? I guess where I was coming from is does Apple host email (icloud.com?) and if that is available on a webmail interface such as logging into icloud.com from any computer, anywhere.

I guess in retrospect the benefit I have with webmail was pre smartphone/tablet

Tks again

My image of "webmail" is using a browser to go to your email provider's website, log in, and read the mail there. Pretty much *my* least favorite method to read mail.

Apple's Mail is a client that runs on the Mac (or the iOS device), goes to various sites to fetch your email from various servers, and present it all in an organized and convenient fashion.

The dictionary built-in to MacOS 10.9 says:

> webmail

> e-mail that is available for use online and stored in the Internet server mailbox, and that is not downloaded to an e-mail program or used offline.
