So true Jim and I was going to say the same thing. Storms of any severity
are usually associated with cold fronts that move through rather quickly and
as you said often within hours of the event. The other things that could
happen are earthquakes and widespread power blackouts that can hit very
large sections of the country like the one in NYC many years ago and the one
we had out west a few years ago. The problem with some severe events is that
you can't get to a station that has working gas pumps and if you can you
could be in line for hours, assuming your vehicle is drivable. Still, a good
inverter you can use from your vehicle is a handy thing to have and will
suffice for most people. You can get an iPhone or iPad charger that plugs
into a cigarette lighter for around $20.00 too.
My solar cell will charge things on cloudy days as long as the clouds are
not too thick. It just takes a lot longer. I like knowing that if all else
fails I can charge from the sun. It's handy camping and backpacking as well.
I have a gell cell I keep on trickle charge all the time. This is the type
of battery that is used to back up alarm systems and emergency building
lights. It is always charged and ready to go.
I decided after the hurricane back on the east coast fairly recently that I
really should have something just in case.

Our power outages have historically occurred on 3 occasions:
Blizzards/ice storms, hurricanes, severe thunderstorms.
In general the next day is clear and sunny, and often the same day, within
hours of the event.
