My iThings have never been synced with a Mac, but I have used different PCs.
What I can do is *backup* to a PC that I am not *syncing* with.
Connect with cable; select device in the list on the left (I used the
sidebar), right-click-backup.
(I have also transferred files both-ways with a different PC using iTunes
file sharing for certain apps.)
If I try to sync, it will warn me about erasing everything and unless I stop
it will proceed to sync with whatever is on the PC it's hooked up to.
I have done a backup (more than one, for insurance), gotten my device either
replaced or re-animated-from-farkledom at the GB, then restored from backup.
I think things were pretty much "all there" (it's been a while).
But isn't backup part of the sync process??

Ugh. I'm in a fog over all this. Thanks for pointing that out.
The good news is that I have finally gotten the iPad to successfully sync
with the Mac. It still will not do a backup, though.
So will this help me at all after I restore the iPad?
