> I have 2 iPads -- a mini and a 3. Currently I am reading a book on both and find that my notes and highlights do not carry from one to the other. That surprised me and is a problem because if I want to look up something that I highlighted, I won't know which device I used.

In October, after I shattered my shoulder, even reading books on the iPad was a little strain (forget about actual hardbacks), and I bought a Kindle PaperWhite.
With the same book loaded on the Kindle and on the iPad in the Kindle App, once set up properly, I find I can read a chapter on the iPad, then later open the Kindle, and it opens to the exact page I closed the iPad on.
I don't do notes and highlights, so I can't speak to that.
Are you using iBooks, Kindle App, or some other reader?
