Have an iPad4. Set PC iTunes (win7 x64) to 'never sync'. Plug iPad into PC. iTunes (have latest ver.) will make a backup of iPad onto PC (coded unreadable file) for possible future use to recover iPad stuff if it goes bad.
We never sync iPad or iPod to iTunes; manually add/delete as needed from/to each.
Also iCloud is another backup
