Thank you to those who replied. I don't know about background processes or rebooting. What should I know or do for general iPad care?
I went to the App Store and searched for Kindle. The Kindle app, instead of FREE, was labeled UPGRADE. So I chose that and got the new version, which works. The old one is gone. I don't know why the Kindle app had not suggested that I upgrade, as other apps have, but now I know one way to upgrade.
