the images on my ipad4 all were taken with external cameras...does this mean i cannot import them to my imac?

Since you don't specify, I am going to assume that you mean importing images *taken on the iPad* to the Mac (as opposed to "images that were imported ONTO the iPad").
"Image Capture" -- on every Mac for 2 or 3 generations of MacOS -- or iPhoto or Aperture.
