It's a habit that people get into. Before hands free phones, the phone would usually be in a central location in the house.

you get up to answer the chair???...i'll never understand why people do that with mobile phones and cell phones commonplace nowadays, why not just put the phone right where you can grab it?*...my wife is among those who lives to arise from a chair to answer the phone in another room...i just don't get it.
