A universal standard will be wonderful. Now if we can buy time/data from local companies while we travel, we'd be set. However, I can't see ATT or Verizon giving up the chance to soak us good for "roaming" in the near future. One can dream.

Yes, closely related, but not the same… LTE is the upgraded development from the GSM technology, and even Verizon with its CDMA technology is migrating to the LTE technology, thus finally bringing a standard that is common to both Verizon and ATT ( Europe ). My point being merely to emphasize that both the old technologies are tending to merge thus making it possible, finally, for our devices to have access to both carriers, and also to European systems with one piece of common hardware in those devices.
