For serious computing instead of an air get a MacBook pro or mac pro. If I were still a professional I'd opt for the Mac pro but I think it's due for a refresh.

That sort of depends on what your usual desktop jobs are.
I wouldn't want to undertake serious video or photo editing on an MBAir.
And personally I prefer a larger screen than 11" or 13".
