I have mostly been ignoring this thread, because all my experience with images imported to my iPad from camera cards has been "display only", since I also later imported the same images directly from the camera cards to my Mac.
I just searched for this topic and quickly found this:

The article has a Mac section, which I tried, and indeed the Camera Connection Kit images on my iPad are shown and can be imported to my Mac.
There are also sections for Windows XP and Windows 7/Vista. I can't check these out because I completely abjure Windows, but perhaps you will find the same as I found for the Mac.
