Several years ago when I bought my first Garmin it came with a mounting unit on top of the dash. I tried to order the windshield mount and was denied because they (windshield) mount was illegal in CA. I do not think that is the case any longer because I now have a windshield mounted GPS unit.the are quite prolific.   I have been stopped at traffic lights many times next to police officers and have not been stopped.

Odd, as I used my own GPS in NZ and Australia, and its better on top of the dash, much safer than having to take eyes off road to look at GPS. That is the reason that CA doesnt allow it on top of dash. Wrong

In CA it may be illegal to use a GPS device while the car's in motion.

You can buy a year of voice for $9.95 right now. However with the iPad bungeed above my steering wheel the top of the screen has large type and icons for what's ahead. I am still on this trip and am visiting family but will get a picture of the screen to the list in a few days.
