If you have ios5 then you can open any apps and swipe to the left to get to another app then swipe to the right to get back. You have to use at least 4 fingers. I just did a test run by opening my iBook, then I opened notes. Not sure about seeing them simultaneously though. I hope this helps. Remember, if you swipe with only one finger, then your turning the page in iBooks, but if you swipe with 4 fingers you can see one or the other without having to double tap the home button. If you have opened various applications then you just keep swiping to get to the one you want.
