Glad to see you got it going. I think you'll like the reliability of the Airport Extreme.
As to the quirkiness of connection, that is something that happens with some cable/dsl modems, but not all the time and not always with the same service. It seems like something just hiccups in the process.
When I installed my latest AE to my network as the main router, I just naturally powered down all the network.
