 My previous router was a net gear 3500N.  I had absolutely no problem connecting that one either.  Worked really good till a few months ago.  I guess the modem keeps all the settings and since I did not unplug it and remove the cables, it kept the old settings without refreshing and picking up the settings of the new router.  I am sure that had this new router been my first, it would have installed without a hitch as well.
 
 I am extremely happy with it.  No more sluggish connections.  :)
