To illuminate why this is, by being a little mysterious Apple doesn't lock themselves into a specific due date.
Lots of little things can go wrong in developing, research, social progress, etc. Apple is just created a privileged position where they are in control better than companies which depend heavily on firm forward dates. It frustrates the press, and it's kept them out of a lot of government and corporate contracts ( because those often require specific roadmaps), but it has the benefit that products can be released when they are actually done, rather than released unfinished and fixed later.
That's why Apple's 'version-1' products are usually so good, and why so many other companies offer such bad products on the release dates. Most other companies set firm release dates, and I don't know of any that set a date with a little padding.
