Right, but the gripe is it can't be done on the iPad itself.  Since I rarely sync - for me, the iPad lives most happily in a world by itself - that's almost out of the question.

I'm hoping that Apple will slip a bulk delete in with an upgrade.  In the meantime, I just do what others have done - keep the heavy-mail accounts on the machine with the full-feature mail reader (Eudora).

This may not be of help to you, but I go to my server, like yahoo, on my regular computer to delete my hundreds of emails. I think my actual problem is that I'm subscribed to too many groups. ;  )

Indeed.  You can delete trashed mail in one foul swipe, but not regular mail.  Bummer.
