Since mine got cut during some construction digging around my building, it
was easy to see.
Poor telco guy spent a hot summer afternoon knitting the pieces back
together -- apartment building, not just one house's wire!
This was about 30 years ago, and we didn't have any alternative
communication systems available.

We had some idiot dove hunter shoot out the phone lines.
As it happened, someone was talking on the house phone (line 1) *to* someone
on the business phone (line 2) while the modem/fax line was also in use
(line 3) – and all 3 went dead exactly simultaneously, just as a shotgun
blast echoed across the valley.
We told the phone company exactly what had happened, but the refuse to
believe it until the repairman found the line break. He showed us the piece
he had to cut out of the line…
