Re: [iPad] Ordered new phone

Bear in mind that in the US, iPhone stats are much higher than global.  Future wise, you will see the same Apple users buying a 6 or 6 Plus, as always. Plus, those who would like to change to Apple but cannot due to screen size AND iOS, plus those who always wanted Apple but moved away due to screen size. These latter two categories were a common point on forums after the iOS announcement, given that the 4.7 and 5.5 were clearly going to happen.

As regards inferior other phones, I guess thats your Apple fan stance, which is fine. Ignoring the cheap Android phones, many models are excellent. In fact, after reading a few reviews of the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, which rated them very highly, common comments were others had better screens, others had better camera, and so on. Amongst the top end phones, which is where Apple lives, its a great phone amongst other great phones. The key is the OS. Many are moving off Android as they are tired of it, WP is good, supposedly, but iOS is a more complete solution, most markedly since iOS7 and iOS8, it has close parity feature wise to Android, as Tim Cook removes silly restrictions from iOS.

It can only go up and up in my opinion

My sushi analogy was awesome. Lol I was very proud of it and still am. I don't believe that any one model of phone sells better than the iPhone 5s model unless it's the iPhone 5 model. But I haven't kept up on stats. I believe the consumers have overwhelmingly chosen apple and in fact here in Nicaragua I see a few things. Comparatively many iPhones as smartphones. Most are dumb phones. But of smartphones I see close to 40% iPhones 40% android phablets or larger phones and 20% or so other android phones. So if you are right that people want apple to have bigger phones next year upon my return I should see 60~80% iPhones and 20% other once they get off the inferior other larger phones and into the platform they truly desire: apple.

I dont agree with your sushi analogy, but good try!!    What I hear, is a lot of support for Apple by Apple users, cos its Apple. Its hard to decipher the fan bias from the facts.

MKV doesnt make large files, its a container. Its the best container as it has the best support for subs, chapters etc.

Various formats are more suited to smaller files, but its much more then MP4, to me its an Apple control thing, to try to force a standard or commonly used format.  MP4 is not great for motion as its frame limired, like AVCHD from memory . H.264 is better, but again, you need to use certain fixed resolution for an iOS device

VLC does play all the formats yes, but software acceleration, well thats great for killing the battery. So you need a latest and greatest iPad to play VLC non Apple supported files, which is most. I cannot see any references to MP4 online as far as quality goes, apart that it is low bandwidth so ideal for online video, as is FLV (Flash) , FLV being a bit better, both being very similar

Mkv. That's an interesting beast. I know die hards love but it usually makes large files in my expletive and those are not exactly mobile. I think uncompressed mo4s do just fine. But my eyes suck. And my ears. Hey maybe I'm the target audience. Lol kidding aside. I haven't checked but doesn't vlc play those? I don't know as when I have borrowed those I'm usually quick to convert them to my preferred format which is mp4

But again I think why apple is bullish about mp4 is that it's geared to be really good and I bet they think other formats would drain the battery or in other ways provide for a crappy experience and they maybe bet that users would be quick to blame apple

I think a good analogy would be this. Walking into your favorite sushi place and asking fir a cheeseburger. They say no. But you say all the popular places serve them. They say no we only do sushi and we do it the best in then to which you both agree.

Cheers

Yes ok. I see, got it.................

Pity that Apple dont allow mkv, that is the best container

Dont follow your reply though. The hoops I mentioned only apply if you use iOS. Not Windows, not Mac, not Linux, not Android and again, not OSX.  Just iOS.. Limited, restricted unlike its older partner OS. Strange. You'd expect OSX and iOS to support the same formats and containers and not suppport the same formats and containers.  MP4 is not good at motion, like AVCHD, buit its supported. Just seems to me its not a quality issue its a control issue, and thats fine if the quality is up there and if the world embraces it.. But that hasnt happened for video, and re screen sizes Apple had to cave on to what is actually real world desire. They should just support what the users wish to use, promote if need be, and make it a full easy experience. If you have multi devices, and like streaming, and video, you do not use Apple, thats it. Unless its just buying off iTunes. That example needs to be made easier, its only hardware acceleration support, as they do allow format support. Bizarre. Not consistent IMHO

Correct as per my first sentence. Outdated container. Very outdated..

avi is a container, not a format. Thats why a converter that supports remuxxing can remux it as there is no need for conversion as its already compatible. but it wont play. So, do we assume the 2 formats that Apple supports of the many are the best, or is that bias?  Whats the deal with mkv?   Also a container not a format, most have H.264 formats, wont play. Its up to me what I play, and if I was Joe Average I dont know about being forced to convert, its very user unfriendly.  Install VLC to make everything play, no you cannot. You end upo with users haveing issues all the time as nothing works. But on a mac, it works, I can install VLC. Just because its an Apple decision doesnt mnake it the best, or the most user friendly. (In this example its 0/10 for both. Cannot play H.264 mkv, even though H.264 is supported, and mkv is everywhere. Like screen sizes, the world has decided

AVI is an outdated container. I get that it's popular but it doesn't mean that it's good. That said I thought my QuickTime played them. I'll hafta check in a few weeks when I get access to my mac.  It's a crappy crappy 20+ year old format. You can google the limitations I can't recall them specifically. Does windows support mp4 or mov out of the box? Hrm? Maybe you think
Apple auld support the popular formats and apple thinks it should only support the best out of the box. Maybe that's it. As for mkv. Yea I dunno but I usually stay away from them.

I agree that I like iOS  as I am glad for a trade off between freedom and protection.

BUT I cannot play an avi video native? or mkv? Bizarre to say the least. I can waste my time getting a third party app, but it wont play using hardware accceleration. If I used another browser, (which I dont), I cannot make that defauilt, how silly is that. Allow another browser, then make it hard to use. All that will go before long, just as the hoops you need to jump through to attach a photo to an email. Its about ease of use and the iOS restrictions make some things a pain. Tim Cook is a good man he is disolving all that, adding ease of use, and holding onto security

Windows isn't open source. Many *nix variants are but I don't think osx is certifiably *nix anymore.

That said yea you can install software from anywhere.... But I'm not certain that will last forever. Not allowing access to certain parts of the os keeps the os stable. The iOS is a more finicky platform because of many things like the cell phone firmware battery issues etc so it's more important to maintain better control. I meN can you imagine a virus attacking the cell phone and toting all calls to a toll 900 number? Yuk. Or can you imagine needing a/v software sucking battery and cycles on a cell phone? Yuk. It's a push pull. I like the apple iOS trade off.
