You can get him set up from the iPad. Before giving it to him go to Settings>General>Reset>Erase All Content & Settings after turning off Find My iPad from the iCloud tab. This will restore the device to factory settings & the set up screens will walk him through the process. A friend of mine has used his iPad2 for several years without a computer & has had no problems.

This will be his 1st iPad. Do I need to register him from his desktop or can I register from the iPad? In other words, do I or Apple need to put iTunes on a computer in order to sync to an iPad, or can I just sync his iPad to the cloud?
