I have a Garmin as well and I use it regularly as well and it syncs with my iPhone so I can answer calls and have hands free phone which I use as rarely as possible. However, it is still difficult to make it choose an alternative route. It sticks to major interstates if possible and there are times when that is a problem.

Google makes it easier to zoom out to see the route while you're following it (driving?). Apple chose the route I would normally go.
I'm loving the Garmin I got for Christmas. It was the real winner on my latest trip.

Apple maps has a graphical way to choose between various routes which is easier for me but I think google maps is a little easier to see.
