Ken,
If you have an older iPad, it could be that the updates require IOS 6, and either your iPad can't be upgraded to IOS 6, or you first need to upgrade it to IOS6.
My original iPad currently shows 3 apps that need updating, but can't update because the OS on my old iPad won't support them. If you look carefully, the apps appear "greyed out" in the list on the update tab.
