My 2 year old iPhone 4 has no screen or back protector, and no scratches. I cannot see myself being so rough on it as to cause a problem, and I find that Zagg and its like look and feel awful.
And as you say, the iPad is basically safer. It isn't in your pocket with your car keys, diamond ring, emery board, etc.
