My Nook Color is great. I can have thousands of books because it allows a smart card for storage.

There have been very good answers from many others but I need to warn folks that the Kindle screen is not easier to read for everyone. The original reason I got an iPad was to read books as both paper and a more paper like Kindle are hard for me to read when I am tired. I have a much easier time on my MacBook so I knew the iPad would work better for me. So adding to the other answers, go to a store (hopefully near you) and try both not only for reading experience but other features as well.
