If funds are not a hindrance, I would choose the new iPad 4G . If you travel a good bit, choose a cellular model. iPad has long battery life. Also at least the 32 GB version. I have a 64 GB and my wife has a 32 GB model. I like Verizon because it will work as a hotspot. The AT&T model will not. If you don't need the hotspot feature, get it anyway (Verizon). It will enhance the resale and doesn't cost extra. No contract needed for either vendor. Do check with AT&T and Verizon for service where you live.
As far as using the iPad at home. You will need a wireless router with a WAN port. Plug a ethernet cable into your DSL modem and into the WAN port on the router. My DSL modem is wireless, so I don't need a router at home.
For our motorhome I use a wireless router. I have three routers. One is a Cradlepoint 1000. I used it at home to access the WiFi (it's free) where we live before we installed DSL service. I have a old Linksys router I use in the coach. I recently purchased a Apple Airport Extreme from Apple for the coach. It was a refurbished unit. One year warranty and not a scratch on it. I wanted it because it operates on both bands. Has a guest account feature. Also has a USB port to attach a hard drive or a printer. The Airport Extreme operates behind a Ubiquity Nano H2, that enhances WiFi signals in RV parks. We have two wireless printers. One at home and another in the motorhome.
As far as where to buy? Apple store or Apple online. Best Buy if one is near where you live. No point in shopping Apple products. Same price everywhere. I also have a Kindle. Great for reading, but the iPad will read Kindle files as well.
The only downside to Apple products is the initial cost. Well made, reliable, excellent support, and FAST. When Mountain Lion is released (June) it will have a lot of features from the iPad.
And last. There are some very sharp iPad users here to help you master the iPad and that is a big plus.
Regards.
