I use Airport Extreme to extend my wifi range with airport express.
I'm not sure if this post will help.
I did it differently, my airport express is on bridge mode connected via wireless to my Airport Extreme to extend the range rather than with wired network cable to extend my wifi range.
So my wifi range extender is the Airport Express, not the Airport Extreme. I have two Airport Express. The Airport Extreme is used as the main base station, while the two Airport Express is down stairs, one near the front yard, the other near the backyard.
I have coverage everywhere in my house and at the same time have airplay to my stereo in the living room since its built-in to Airport Express, not Airport Extreme.
