I am a bit confused. That box your instructor had probably WAS an Apple TV if it was glossy black, about 1 inch tall, and shaped somewhat like a drink coaster. It is needed for WIRELESS connection from the iPad. If you do not need a wireless connection from the iPad, I ‘believe’ there is an iPad to HDMI cable that can be used to connet to a TV input port.

Maria, I just went to a class for beginner iPad users (yep - that's me!
A beginner!), where the guy teaching the class had a small box (like a
Roku, but not a Roku) alongside the TV. When asked, he told us that you
needed that along with your Apple TV for mirroring. For other TVs he
said that you would use a HDMI cable. Maybe you could call or email
Apple to ask about it.
