[iPad] Re: OK to leave charger plugged in?

The guys in gassavers.org were shutting off the car engine at a red light and I explained to them that they are trying to save a penny worth of gas a minute and wearing out the $300 starter motor. Chances are you wiill break the charger from removing it and plugging it in each time you need to charge but then again I unplug mine because it has a really bright blue led in it and I don't need that lighting up the room at night when I am trying to sleep. You are talking pennies for a $500-900 iPad so . . . I wouldn't worry about it so much. There are other things you can be doing to save much more money and just using the iPad instead of a bigger conventional computer is already saving a lot on your electric bill.

In my opinion just leave the charger plugged in unless there is a storm, then unplug it.

It takes so much less power to run the iPad than a laptop or desktop that you are already way greener than you can imagine. The real power wasters are the UPS Battery backups that take 15 to 25 watts of power constantly to keep the circuits powered up and the battery charged. I unplugged a few in my office and saved about 25-30 Kwh a month on my electric bill. The iPad only takes about 4 watts to operate once it's battery is fully charged and 2 watts if the screen goes dark.

The amount of power when not connected to the iPad is so small that the electric meter will not even move. If it was using 1 watt of power (it uses less) and left on all the time it would cost about $0.15 a month for the typical electric bill.
