I am just jumping to the of this thread but I measure the power that these chargers draw when in use and when just plugged in with a Kilowatt meter and when the iPad is fully charged it goes to as close to ZERO watts as it can measure. It draws 10 watts when going full charge rate and I actually use an aftermarket charge with a 2.1 amp output and a second 1 amp output. If it is cold then it isn't using or wasting any power. These new chargers are Very efficient and the only thing you should worry about is lightning strikes in a storm causing a voltage spike that could blow them up.
Another battery charging thing is that four 25% charges causes a lot less wear on the battery than a 100% charge. Type to keep the battery above 30% because going lower really affects the battery total number of charge discharge cycle life. Although they say this anymore it is also not a good idea to fully charge the battery either but take that with a grain of salt. I charge it up and keep charging it until the power goes to zero going into the iPad and afterwards it can run for an hour and still stay at 100% on the battery gauge.
