Using an iPhone charger on an iPad is like using a trickle charger on a car battery.  No harm is done.

I want to thank you all for your input on my question.  What you're telling me is that the current drawn by the device depends upon the charger end of the circuit rather that the load.  I'm not familiar with what the charger end circuitry looks like, but was afraid the iPad might draw more current than the iPhone charger could handle.  After all, that IS why we use circuit breakers and fuses.  I gather, however, that the smaller charger simply won't deliver more that the rated ampere.

As for the longer charging time – I don't generally use the iPad while I'm asleep anyway.
