I have an iPad
Model: MF432LL/A
Version 7.1.2

How can I find out whether it's an iPad 2 or 3 or whatever?

Type "MF432LL/A" into Google (or Bing, or whatever).
It tell me that is an original iPad Mini MF432LL/A (16GB, Wi-Fi only, Space Gray)

Is it wise to update it to the current OS?

A little reading on this forum, or research on the web, including at Apple.com, would reveal that ALL iPad Mini's are eligible for upgrades to iOS 8.

Whether you do so or not depends on many factors, including whether you have Macs or iPhones to coordinate with.
