Nobody beats Verizon when it comes to coverage but AT&T is a close second that I could live with.

True, at present, if your concern is the entire US.

East of the Mississippi, ATT covers almost everything; Verizon misses half of Kentucky, most of West Virginia, and some significant patches in Pennsylvania and New York.

West of the Mississippi, both are patchier; ATT does better in Montana and Nevada.
