That's expected. I would expect a new model iPhone to be faster than last years model, OS being the same.

It's faster than my iPhone5 with both running iOS8.

faster than any prior iPhone running the same OS.
faster in Wifi communications with other 802.11ac devices than precious iPhones without ac are.
