To each his own. My main problem is with search and highlighting. And the primitive browser is pretty awful. They're just coasting - zero competition, rock-bottom price.
Yes, I too need the Kindle back light. It's always on - you can't turn it off, just dim it to null - so the designers pretty clearly agreed that it's necessary.

I have been using my Paperwhite fairly heavily for a year. I find that without turning the screen lighten up high, it is too dim, grey, and "squinty" to be a comfortable reader indoors (where all my reading is done).
I haven't found it in the least slow and clunky, given that its only function is to display book text.
