I don't know if the screen is any tougher than the earlier ones or not,
but I put a screen protector on my original iPad when I first bought it
and after a week I took it off because the screen just didn't look as
vibrant as I thought it should.
My wife's iPad2 doesn't have a screen protector and neither does my
iPad4 and they both look as nice as the day we bought them (I've had my
iPad4 just under a year and my wife has had her iPad2 for over 2 years)
and my original iPad is still very nice looking, although there is one
short very slight scratch that you really have to work to notice.
