Have you tried the brightness adjustment slider in the Control Center to see if that will accomplish what you want?

I'm not sure this is the right forum but since iPhone and iPad are similar maybe you can answer this for me.
I absolutely hate having to unlock the device. There is an option to never lock but I'm wondering if the screen will go dark. I'd had to run the battery down from the thing never going to sleep.
