I do not believe your new Verizon enabled iPad3 will have a sim card slot. There is none on the iPad2 Verizon unit. No SIM card is needed . Your decision is a good one, in my opinion as I researched the same situation when purchasing my iPad2 3G model last year. Overall, Verizon has the best coverage …. Especially when going into the boonies. ATT has been catching up, but best as I could determine through direct experience and a multitude of questions to both ATT and Verizon customers, Verizon is still the best for overall coverage in the USA.
Of course you will be disappointed if you plan on traveling with it overseas. I don't, generally, so no problem. Was in the Caribbean recently and relied on WiFi instead.

I went with a 64GB 4G also. Was disappointed that had to pick AT&T or Verizon when ordering. Sat there for a long time. The iPhone is Verizon. It's best here in the boonies of the US West though get service from both at the house. AT&T has an initial less expensive $15 but after that they seemed similar. If all equal would like phone and pad on different networks.
Have the option for a hotspot with the iPhone so don't know how much will really use ipad cellular data. Finally flipped a mental coin and picked Verizon. If doing much overseas traveling would likely pick AT&T.
The verizon iPhone has the place for a SIM card but I think the US phones are basically locked. Trying to say i don't know how easy it is to take a Verizon iPhone or new iPad overseas and us the cellular data.
That's how I picked but not certain I was correct.
