$10.00.... cheaper than a surge to me. Cheaper than a replacement power supply for an Apple product too.

If there are potentially limited AC sockets, there are devices to plug
into the standard 2-outlet setup that provide 6 outlets, or buying a
power strip is very inexpensive and increases the number of outlets.
I see no benefit to the USB outlet concept now. Once they become
standard in all new outlet installations, perhaps, but by then the tech
world will have moved on to some new standard and there won't be a need
for them.
I agree with Ed that it's no big deal to buy extra chargers if necessary
and have them available to use in existing outlets.
