Thank you Helene for the great step by steps. I will go through them carefully. Yes, i think the syncing mode is what gets me. It freaks me out when it says "will delete everything on the ipad".
I will work on this when i have time to really go through it very carefully.
Thanks so much for taking the time to put the instructions here for me.

Today I went into the native contact app that I mistakenly took for an address book and discovered that the addresses I entered by hand, names, snail mail, phone, are gone. I am not happy.I'd be very unhappy too if that had happened but I don't think it has to do with the fact that the data had been entered by hand. I think it has to do with the way you performed the sync. Which means, if I'm right, that you don't actually need another app.The rest of my post will be useful to you ONLY if what you meant by "the native contact app" is the iPad app called Contacts (and you were not mistaken in thinking it's an address book). If that's what you mean, the addresses you entered in that app on your iPad should not have disappeared, and you CAN go on using this app the way you first did. The trick is in the syncing.(I think.)Re-enter a few contacts by hand, the way you did the first time.Next I'd suggest that you go to iTunes and make sure no sync operation is done automatically. For those of us who are not familiar with syncing, like many iPad first-time users, I believe automatic syncing is risky. The following instructions were copy-pasted from this website:Step 1 is important, make sure you do NOT connect the iPad to your computer until you're done.1. Before you plug the iPhone or iPod or iPad into the computer, go to iTunes.
2. On a Mac, go to the iTunes menu -> Preferences.
On a PC, go to Edit -> Settings
3. In the pop up window, look for the icon or tab that says Devices. Choose it. The window will change.
4. Just below the box, you'll see a an option reading "Prevent iPods, iPhones, and iPads from syncing automatically."
5. Check it and click OK at the bottom of the window.
Auto-sync is now turned off and you're safe to plug your iPod or iPhone into the computer.NOW. Connect the iPad to your computer. You see its name in the menu bar at left. Click on this. Your computer now "sees" your iPad. Below the little window with an apple, there's a horizontal list of tabs. Click the second tab, I believe the English name is Data. Now READ carefully the choices iTunes offers. You may synchronize contacts from your iPad, from your Yahoo or Google accounts. Same thing for your Calendars, etc. Read those, make the appropriate choices.Scroll all the way down. You come to the risky part, the ADVANCED window. iTunes gives you a way, if you so choose, to REPLACE everything on your iPad with what's on your computer. Make sure that this is not selected. iTunes now displays an APPLY button. Click this. iTunes will do its thing, i.e. perform a backup and then a synchronization. Now check the iPad Contact app. Are the contacts you entered manually still there?Hélène D.P.-S.: I wrote this before I read your last message on that thread. If your Yahoo contact won't sync, might you be using different email addresses, so that Yahoo does not "recognize" your iPad?
