First of all don't tell me what I need to buy, I know my own needs better than you.
I have a 8540w Windows laptop with 6 gigs of RAM to do heavy duty stuff (Visual Studio and SQL Server) I don't play games ever although my kids do. I have a few USB devices plugged into it and I like lots of RAM so I can have 6 browsers open (FireFox, Chrome, RockMelt, IE, Opera, FireFox with 30+ tabs open, Safari) and I remote into work with that laptop. I video skype with my son in Tokyo and TeamViewer into his system every morning and RAM and may be Yahoo Messengering with several people including my boss and GF. More RAM means Skype runs fast. I do run Virtual Machines on it too. I run ClipMate always as well and Pandora to listen t music and a YouTube window to watch Videos. I have a fast connection FIOS so my videos on YouTube and Skype calls to Tokyo work fast and I can stream Pandora and Hulu, Netflix fast, etc
I would not touch Ubuntu or Linux with a 10 foot pole. I would use an Android Galaxy Tablet if I wanted to run any kind of Linux flavor.
The reason I like lots of RAM is I tend to outgrow my system's RAM on all boxes quick because I use some complex apps. If I get a system with least RAM within a few months I will get 'out of memory' messages on any machine I ever buy as I use some cutting edge applications that can be greedy.
I come home from work and use my laptop but would rather use an iPad 2 or 3 to do Pandora, NetFlix, Email, FaceBook, Yahoo Messenger, Skype with son and occasionally remote into my work desktop and Mouse support for remoting into work PC would be amazing. My work PC is quad core with 12 gigs of RAM I can use the iPad2 to control it fine but I tend to want a mouse cursor working if I do that.
The reason I want to do with an iPad is I can not have the screen in my way the laptops are bulky the iPad is 1 piece and can lay flat while I watch TV and multi-task on my browsers, Yahoo, Skype, work PC I remoted into, etc. Laptops are too damn bulky with their screens vlock my line of sight and just are distracting when multi-tasking, keyboards, hinges iPads are skinny and small I love that. No I do not need another laptop the iPad 2 works well enough although I will love the iPad 3 even more since its resolution will match my work machine or my son's machine resolution when I remote desktop/teamviewer into either.

It will not have out of the box mouse support. I guarantee. If by tons you mean more than double then be prepared to be disappointed. If you want tons of ram tons of gpu and tons of support for peripherals then you'll need a Mac or Ubuntu box or maybe a gaming box running windows xp. It won't be an iPad. Sorry.
