Android backs up a lot of your info to the cloud.
I like the cloud and cloud backups as much as anybody but Kindle had it first and best and still does, and Android has some cloud backup out of the box.
I am not an iTunes hater, but it could be made a lot easier for most people. Many of the complaints about its syncing are because Apple has not listened to the disgruntled users and improved it.

The cloud is making this much less of an issue because most of your data is there. But for those that have local data, iTunes is wonderful to have to put the content on your device.
