Re: [iPad] problems installing iOS 5

This is an error that pops up when you have used an app like TinyUmbrella to help with jailbreaking.  I think that there are other scenarios where that pops up, too.  This is an error caused by some rerouting that has occurred with your computer's system files, so that iTunes cannot connect to the proper servers.  You can fix this by editing the file in question with a text editor.  I'm searchinig for the instructions, and will send a link as soon as I can locate them.

Hi, Folks:

I've a Version 1 ipad with 64 gig of memory and 3G/GPS. I've tried a couple of times to move from iOS 4.3.3 (8J3) to iOS 5 without any luck. iTunes appears to back up the contents of the ipad, and then gives an error message.

I get one dialog box that says "Preparing …."
Then one that says "Backing up iPad" (this seems to take forever)
After a while, iTunes shows "Extracting Software" message in info area
Finally I get a dialog box "The iPad "iPad" could not be restored. This device isn't eligible for the requested build."

HUH?????

My understanding is that iOS V5 is suitable for all iPads. I clicked on the "More Information" button

I've got all of the updates (iTunes 10.5, both Lion updates, iPhoto) installed on my Early 2011 Macbook Pro notebook computer. My ipad has not been jailbroken, so that should not be an issue.

Right now, I'm not at home; if I don't get things working before we get back I'll be making an appointment with my local Genius Bar to see what they have to say.

Thanks,
