Re: [iPad] Thinking About the iPad Pro

I think you are missing the point Tony.

iOS is a small, lightweight OS specifically designed to be used on TOUCH SCREEN devices.

OS X is a much larger GENERAL PURPOSE OS that can be used on almost any sort of hardware. (laptops, desktops, towers, etc)

If iOS becomes a GENERAL PURPOSE OS, then it bloats, slows down and ceases to be very good as an OS on TOUCH SCREEN devices (witness Windows 8, 8.1 & 10 and Surface)

Many of the things OS X can do iOS can also do.

BUT, don't confuse App Store policies with iOS limitations. Just because Apple does not allow uTorrent or torrent apps on the iOS App Store, does not make it an iOS limitation.

If you stick entirely within the Mac App Store, I'm almost certain there won't be any torrent apps either! (Just checked, a quick search on Torrent bought up no torrent downloaders)

You need to seperate the "Apple rules" and iOS limitations because they are two separate things.

Is an iOS device (iPhone, iPad, iPod, AppleTV, etc) PRIMARILY a consumption device? The answer in most cases is yes.

Is an OS X device (MBP, MBA, rMBP, iMac etc) PRIMARILY a consumption device? The answer in most cases is yes.

Can they be used to do other things? In other words, can they be used as CREATION devices? The answer is a resounding YES!

By limiting yourself to the various App Stores, you ensure a safe, moderated group of software that will keep both your iOS & OS X device safe and secure.

Having said that, you can also go outside the walled garden and access much other software that Apple feels (for whatever reason) is unsafe, compromising or a security risk.

The choice is entirely yours. I prefer my iOS device to be safe, secure & always available and working. I have an iPad Air, iPhone 6, AppleTV & Apple Watch. They all work brilliantly together.

I also have a rMBP & iMac. These are my work and play machines. These are the machines I use to run VMs and many other jobs that then iOS devices won't do.

And as a point. Just because you can make something (iPad) do something (torrents) doesn't mean you should. There are better and easier ways to do that job.

Damn, I can blather.

Anyways, thats my 2c worth.

Security, good point.

But. I can add files by USB to my Mac. Addomg to the iPad requires clumsy workarounds if tye file sare sitting on a drive or USB or computer
Thats ok on a Mac so security isnt the issue
uTorrent that we talked about before has a Mac App on the Mac Appstore, why not iOS? Security cant be an issue as its allowed on the Mac

iOS could be free of many limitations but they dont allow it, as it will then be a laptop replacement and cannibalise , that is the only rational; explanation why. Its not technical or security. It certainly appears to be so we will buy two devices and not one. I feel in reality it woudlnt be like that for most of us

The iPad of any size is a creative device for artists, the larger size hasnt changed that although it makes it nicer to use. So is me watching a movie. Weight, size are downsides for some, for others its a benefit. But the overall functionality hasnt changed, thats my point all along. And by functionality I mean OS. The iPad is there to be whatever you want it to be, but that depends what they allow iOS to be
